At Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP, we believe technology is about more than devices. It’s a way to bring older adults together and connect them with supportive communities. Through a rich mix of classes, interest groups, events, and online resources, we promote social engagement – a powerful way to reduce isolation and loneliness, which can be predictors of elder abuse.
What We Offer
Our principal program, Senior Planet from AARP, focuses on five core impact areas: social engagement, financial security, health and wellness, creative expression, and civic participation. Within social engagement, we offer a variety of programs including live discussion groups, an online book club, open mic nights, participant-led events, and private spaces where older adults can support one another. These programs are available online and in person, all designed to help older adults make meaningful connections. Participants often tell us that these programs are not just classes; they are lifelines.
Where It Happens
- Virtual classes – We offer free, live virtual programs every week on topics like tech basics, digital safety, fitness, mindfulness, and creative arts. These sessions give participants a chance to learn something new while also building community.
- In-person programs – Senior Planet centers in New York City; Plattsburgh, NY; Denver, CO; and Miami, FL – as well as partner sites in Montgomery County, MD and San Antonio, TX – offer hands-on tech help and in-person classes that bring people together. Through our licensing program, Senior Planet classes are also offered at over 500 community sites across 35 states.
- Senior Planet Community – This safe, ad-free, social platform is exclusive to older adults and features over 40 peer-led interest groups. Users can support each other around topics like music, writing, and pets. Sharing stories, learning new skills, and laughing together helps participants build a sense of belonging, which is key to lowering the risk of elder mistreatment.
- The Senior Planet Hotline – Knowledgeable, patient agents are available to offer one-on-one tech guidance and a friendly voice whenever older adults need support. For more information, visit our hotline info page or call 888-713-3495.
Why It Matters for Preventing Elder Abuse
Loneliness and isolation can increase the risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation. When older adults feel confident using technology, stay socially engaged, and are part of a strong support system, they are better able to recognize red flags and speak up when something feels off. The relationships built through our programs offer connection and security.
